The Last Cupcake!

You know the ad campaign: What would you do for a Klondike Bar? Well, what would you do for the last cupcake you really wanted? Just how fanatical are you? This is my story.

It started like any other morning. I was sipping coffee, listening to the TV and reviewing my Facebook news feed. Then, it happened.

Suite 106 Cupcakery posted a mouth-watering photo captioned, Oreo Cheesecake Mud Pie is stuffed with Oreo cheesecake and it’s in-store today!

No need to tell me twice. I shared the post with my friends and stated my quest intentions. Moreover, since it was Wednesday, Cupcake Happy Hour would be from 4-6pm. During happy hour, cupcakes are discounted by $1. (If you have my addiction, you know the savings helps.)

As a regular at Suite 106, I knew there was a chance they might run out of this featured flavor by late afternoon. Thus, I would have to be there by 4pm sharp, if I were going to risk it.

I went about my day as originally planned. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage my time appropriately. Instead of being at the cupcakery for the start of happy hour, I was stuck in traffic. To make matters worse, when I finally arrived at the Victoria Gardens Center, it took me longer than usual to find parking.

As I walked into the food court area, I passed a small group of people. One of them was a young man eating a cupcake. It appeared to be a Oreo Cheesecake Mud Pie. My spidey senses were tingling. Was that the last one?

My pace quickened. When I approached the Suite 106 counter, a customer was placing her order. “I’ll take two of the Oreo cupcakes,” she said. The employee replied pleasantly, “Those are our last ones.”

In a matter of milliseconds, the day’s events flashed before me. I thought of the tantalizing photo, the pledge I made on Facebook, the traffic I had battled and let’s not forget the craving that had been building all day. To come this far, to be so close and I missed it by minutes? Who knows when they’ll have this flavor again?

I was heartfelt as I exclaimed, “Noooooooo!”

Both women looked at me. Speechless. I can only imagine what they were thinking, but at that moment I didn’t care.

Then, the customer said calmly, “Okay… I’ll just take one.”

I thanked her profusely, sighed with relief and laughed. The employee reminded me gently to get there early. Lesson learned. I paid for my Oreo Cheesecake Mud Pie and smiled all the way home.

The moral of this story: cupcakes wait for no one. Or maybe it’s the early bird gets the cupcake. Either way, I suggest you heed my tale. The customer in front of you may not be as kind.

By the way, as expected, the cupcake was scrumptious! I do recommend it – just plan accordingly. When the Oreo Cheesecake Mud Pie is on their menu, they still sell out quickly.
