Nothing against gourmet cupcakes; however, there’s something evocative about homemade quality.
The cupcakes at Southern Girl Desserts in Los Angeles, California taste like home. This southern inspired dessert company was born in 2007 out of a need to bring “southern hospitality” to the West Coast.
I first became aware of them last month, when they won Food Network’s Cupcake Wars. Coincidentally, it was the first episode I ever watched. As I rooted for the home team, I was eager to try their southern treats.
I started with one of the cupcakes they’re most known for, Sweet Potato. Southern Girl Desserts did not disappoint.
The cake was moist, dense and flavorful. Between the frosting and cake, was a layer of sweet potato pie filling – not too much, but just enough to complement. The buttercream frosting was smooth and generous. I enjoyed every morsel.
Next, I tried their Pecan Pie Cupcake. This is the reason I planned my visit around their Tuesday menu. I love pecan pie and I’ve never had a cupcake version.
To say this cupcake was delectable is an understatement. Every once in a while, I come across a foodie experience that I refer to as life changing. This was one of those moments.
The cake was moist, dense and packed with pecans. Like the pie, some pecans settled at the top of the cake. There wasn’t as much buttercream frosting on this cupcake. However, I was so immersed in the cake’s flavor that I didn’t mind. It was still enough frosting to enhance the cake’s taste.
I give Southern Girl Desserts 4 out of 5 stars. I’m eager to go back and try more flavors, especially the Chicken & Waffle Cupcake that was featured on Cupcake Wars.
It’s good to know that amidst the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, you can still find some down home cupcakes.
