Slater's 50/50 Bacon Blondie

After my recent cupcake disappointment, I sought solace in the one thing that has never let me down…bacon.

My girlfriends and I got together for an early dinner at Slater’s 50/50 in Huntington Beach, California. Slater’s is famous for creating the world’s first 50/50 burger – 50% ground bacon and 50% ground beef. Along with their “Design It” menu, this restaurant is foodie nirvana.

Of course you should save room for dessert. It was on my agenda from the start.

My initial plan was their 50/50 Famous Bacon Brownie. It’s two chocolate brownies sandwiching candied bacon and chocolate ganache, topped with more candied bacon, served à la mode.

I had the pleasure of sharing this baconized confection during my last trip with a group of friends. Since I only scored a few spoonfuls, I vowed to come back and have one of my very own.

However, my plans were derailed when I came across a new item, their 50/50 Bacon Blondie. It’s two stacked brown sugar-vanilla blondies with peanut butter frosting and candied bacon, served á la mode. I had to have it!

I ordered my entree accordingly and prepared my dessert stomach. After our main course was complete, my girlfriends were relaxing and letting their food settle. I was ready to get down to business and ordered the Bacon Blondie. The waitress gave me a high-five, confirming I made an excellent choice.

A short time later, it arrived with enough spoons for sharing. I quickly removed the extra spoons, telling the server those wouldn’t be necessary. My friend who knew me the longest simply laughed. I took a photo, and then took my first bite.

Please stop shaking your heads at me. I invited my friends to try as well.

It was incredible!

“Oh, my gosh!!” I said with a mouthful of Bacon Blondie.

One of them understood full-mouth speak. The others looked at me like I was uttering a foreign language.

With ice cream or without, the flavors complemented each other perfectly. The cookie was soft and chewy, the peanut butter frosting was rich, and the candied bacon was savory.

The Slater’s 50/50 restaurant manager stopped by our table to ask how things were. I think I said amazing between bites. Who knows? I do remember he smiled at my response.

Alas, I wasn’t able to finish it all. My friends ate most of the ice cream and candied bacon soup. A little more than three-quarters in, I started to get a Bacon Blondie sugar coma headache (yes, there is such a thing) and took the remainder home.

I’m happy to report that after plenty of water and some sleep, I fully recovered the next day. You can’t keep a foodie down.
