The Bakery That Came to Dinner

Sweet Red Peach - Strawberry Cheesecake Red VelvetLike many families, mine has certain holiday traditions. We all bring items so no single person is responsible for the meal. For desserts, homemade is expected.

As a Frosting Fanatic, I always appraise the dessert table before dinner. This Thanksgiving, I was surprised to see a German Chocolate Cake resting upon a glass plate.

“Who brought that?” I inquired.

My sister advised that her son had bought the cake.

“Humph. What was he thinking?” I said incredulously.

I marched off to question him. Actually, it was more like an interrogation.

It had been a while since I had seen my nephew. As a result, he wasn’t aware of my frosted pursuits and the gravity of the situation.

He revealed the cake was from Sweet Red Peach in Inglewood, California.

Ah, I gave him the stamp of approval.

I remembered the bakery from a community event in Los Angeles a couple of years ago. I tasted their 7-Up cupcake and it was delicious. I knew we were in good hands.

Sure enough, the German Chocolate Cake did not disappointment. I wanted more, but this time I wanted cupcakes.

It turns out I didn’t have to wait long. I was in the area that weekend and stopped by Sweet Red Peach.

Sweet Red Peach - Chocolate Salted CaramelUpon entering the bakery, I was tempted by individual pies and banana pudding as well. Nonetheless, I stayed focus on the cupcake mission and made my selections.

I started with their Red Velvet Strawberry Cheesecake. Usually, I avoid Red Velvet when I review a bakery. I’m incredibly particular and only trust a few shops.

However, based on their German Chocolate, I felt confident in their ability to do this flavor justice. Moreover, I couldn’t resist the Strawberry Cheesecake combination.

I’m glad I trusted my instincts. This was Red Velvet done right.

The cake was moist and its flavor spot on. The frosting wasn’t your typical cream cheese; it reminded me of cheesecake, especially with the graham crumbs around the rim. The dollop of strawberry puree in the middle blended with the cake’s color. Yet, you could taste its influence.

My only complaint – the cupcake wasn’t bigger. I wanted the experience to last longer.

Next I tried their Chocolate Salted Caramel. My nephew said this cupcake was a must-try.

The cake was moist and the buttercream frosting had the appropriate balance of chocolate. I enjoyed the crunchy contrast of the buttery toffee sprinkled on top.

When I reached the center, there was a burst of rich caramel. It made the cake that much sweeter.

I saved the piece of chocolate drizzled toffee for my last bite. Delectable.

I give Sweet Red Peach 4 out of 5 stars. With baking like this, they are welcome to dinner any time… I should let my nephew know, so he’ll get the hint.
