The New Cupcakes in Town

Sweet Epies - Lemon CupcakeFriends, being a Frosting Fanatic in Southern California is a tough endeavor. It’s a broad area to cover and I confess, new bakeries slip in under my radar.

That’s why I look to others for help. For my latest recon, IE Shine On, an Inland Empire guide to the latest events, weekend activities, dining, and more.

They lead me to a new bakery in my backyard, Sweet Epies in Downtown Riverside, California.

Perhaps it was cupcake fate, because on the day of my visit, Sweet Epies was running a BOGO special. 

I couldn’t have been happier. Now it was just a matter of selecting two cupcakes.

There were four flavors to choose from. 

The owners kindly offered a sample, but I declined. I didn’t want to spoil the experience of the first taste.

I came to a decision and left before one of their mini pies found its way into the bag.

I began my critique with their Strawberry Cupcake. It’s a strawberry cake topped with Chantilly cream and a whole strawberry.

This was unlike any strawberry cupcake I’ve had before.

Rather than being pureed or simply flavored within the batter, Sweet Epies cake was filled with pieces of fresh strawberries. The cake amidst the berries was moist, with a muffin-like density.

Sweet Epies - Strawberry CupcakeThe Chantilly cream had additional strawberry bits. It was delightful. The owner advised of vanilla bean seeds in its preparation and it was evident.

I only wish there was more of the whipped cream. I tried to ration, but it was gone too soon.

I consoled myself with the sweet strawberry on top.

I moved on to their Lemon Cupcake, a lemon cake with lemon buttercream frosting.

Every now and then, I have an epic cupcake experience. I don’t use the term lightly. In fact, I haven’t had one since last November.

However, at first bite I knew this was another.

The lemon cake was sweet and buttery. Its texture was reminiscent of a luscious pound cake and its lemon flavor was light. 

The lemon was more obvious in the creamy frosting. The zest had the right zing.

Like their other cupcake, this one was slightly smaller than average. I found myself dividing the cake to extend the moment.

I relished every crumb.

When it was gone, I looked sadly at my plate and groaned.

I give Sweet Epies 4 out of 5 stars. Yes, I can find bigger cupcakes, but none that taste like this.

I will be back and next time, I’m stocking up on their lemon!
