The Strawberry Shortcake Pie Persuasion

I Like Pie_Strawberry Shortcake

Did you know that May is National Strawberry Month? 

That’s right, an entire month to take notice of this delicious fruit and its benefits. Strawberries are low in calories and high in Vitamin C.

Though, I’m not sure how valuable those nutrition facts are when your favorite way to enjoy strawberries involves desserts.

Of course I wanted to participate in this tasty celebration. I just needed to decide how and with whom.

After some thought, I chose a favorite bakery, I Like Pie Shop in Claremont, California. I hadn’t been there in a while and their spring menu offered a couple of strawberry options.

There was a juicy Strawberry Cobbler and their Strawberry Rhubarb, a sweet and tart combination.

Yet for me, these didn’t compare to the Strawberry Shortcake. Inspired by the Good Humor Bar, it’s strawberries and pastry cream, with a crumb topping.

Now I have fond memories of the ice cream bar, so I was curious to see how this would be captured in a pie.

Moreover, I was trying to see strawberry shortcake in a new light. I’ve never cared much for the dessert. As a child, my mother would set it before me and I’d give it a suspicious look.

Even then, angel food cake, whipped cream, and fruit were not satisfying.

The Strawberry Shortcake at I Like Pie was only available in the large jelly jar size.

This wasn’t really a dilemma. Since I don’t believe in sharing, it would just mean more for me.

Hence I completed my purchase and left the shop before I could get into even more trouble.

Later at home, I grabbed a spoon and transferred the pie from its box to a plate.

As my spoon broke the tender crust, it revealed generous strawberry slices covered in pastry cream.

Then, I took my first taste.

The fruit was sweet and juicy. The pastry cream was silky, but not too rich, rather the perfect complement. And the crust was slightly buttery. It was there to enhance, not to distract from the filling.

I kept eating, slowly savoring the textures and flavors. Each bite was a delight.

Not only was the pie better than the ice cream bar, it was also better than any strawberry shortcake I’ve had.

Indeed, the dessert had been redeemed.

I should have known. If anybody were up to challenge, it would be I Like Pie Shop. After all, they made a pie lover out of a Frosting Fanatic.

Is there anything they can’t do?
