My friends, I must confess. While it’s been a tasty month of pastries, cookies, baking, and ice cream, I’ve become laxed in my frosting fanaticism. So for my latest mission, I resolved to find a special cupcake to make up for lost time.

Of course, such a cupcake wasn’t the sort of thing to leave to chance. Thus, I tried to improve my odds by returning to My Delight Cupcakery in Ontario, California.

Browsing their April menu, one particular dessert caught my eye – White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookie Cupcake. It’s a cookie dough cake baked with macadamia nuts and white chocolate chips, frosted in cookie dough buttercream, garnished with more macadamia nuts and white chocolate chips, and then topped with a macadamia nut cookie.

As a lover of the cookie, what more could I ask for in the cupcake?

Available on Saturdays only, I arrived at My Delight Cupcakery within a couple of hours of opening to guarantee inventory. At $4 each, I ordered one, not ready just yet to gamble more.

That night, I placed the cupcake on a plate and set the cookie aside. Piercing the buttercream and cake with my fork, the first bite caught me off guard.

The cookie dough cake had a nice taste and texture. However, the frosting had a strong butter-like flavor. I say butter-like because there seemed something artificial about it. I have a penchant for natural butter, so I’m quite sensitive.

I took more bites. Some with just cake, noticing random bits of macadamia nuts. Some were frosting only. The garnish of macadamia and white chocolate, could not disguise the butter-like tang.

Ultimately, I concluded the buttercream wasn’t bad. But it wasn’t the cookie dough flavor My Delight Cupcakery described either. 

I saved the Macadamia Nut Cookie for last. It was small enough to eat in one mouthful. Yet, I chose to nibble. Surprisingly, it had the same pungent, butter-like flavor as the cupcake’s frosting.

Though it was soft, I didn’t much care for it. The butter-like flavor was too much for the little cookie.

Staring at the empty plate, my dessert stomach was quenched, but my mind was restless. I realized even the best cupcake ideas from a trusted bakery could go astray.

Indeed it was another lesson to remember, but not one that should stop me from trying. My wins still outweigh any losses.
